I have concerns for how to use zoom for my statistics class.
Jared Kishbaugh
11:12
@Carl Frels - this will be recorded and will have a transcript
Carl Frels
12:24
Jared…when will the transcript be available?
lstallba
12:38

13:04
For folks who don’t use BOLT much - could the BOLT infrastructure provided in the Teaching Online Courses online course (all the student support info and resources and etc.) be made available to everyone somehow?
lstallba
13:11
Folks should mute their audio
lstallba
13:26
Mute audio til you want to talk.
lstallba
13:54
Janet, do you have your interpreter
Abby Hare-Harris
14:33
can you upload a picture to use in your quiz?
jwhisner
14:33
Is there a way to upload quizzes wholesale to BOLT without using the quiz tool? This could be cumbersome for a 50 question test.
lstallba
14:41
Abby Yes
Abby Hare-Harris
14:49
can we see how to do that?
lstallba
15:12
Jennifer, I defer to Jared. Usually we could have IMDC students enter in quizzes.
Angela La Valley
15:23
There is a help course in BOLT called "BOLT Help" that has a lot of tutorials to help with a lot of these items as well
Angela La Valley
15:35
I think everyone has access to that BOLT Help page
Jared Kishbaugh
15:37
@jwhisner - Yes, there are ways, dependent if you have publisher test bank files or if you are using your own Word file
jwhisner
15:50
U Wisc had a translator for blackboard, but the only one I’ve been able to find for BOLT doesn’t work.
jwhisner

@Jared - own files
Bill
16:22
If we give a longer exam such as a midterm or final on BOLT, would we use "Quiz" or is there a separate facility for that?
Angela La Valley
16:41
I use the Quiz tool for Exams in my distance ed classes
Dianna Cherie Roberts
16:51
Quiz is the same as test, that just what it is called
Jared Kishbaugh
16:54
@Bill - The Quiz tool would handle quizzes/exams
tschmidt
17:33
I hope you’ll show us how to use the grade book!
David Sedlak
20:00
when you did that can the students see the questions?
Jared Kishbaugh
20:25
@David - no, not until they enter the quiz
carriewinship
20:26
Can more than one professor share a question library?
Kelly Roth
20:46
You can export and import question libraries.
Rebecca Willoughby
20:49
Students can see questions when you "make it visible"-- you can also do that before you post the quiz, in the restrictions tab
Rebecca Willoughby
21:46
Right, to clarify: they can see the QUIZ, but they can't see the questions until they answer. You can also set time limits on quizzes if you need
jwhisner
22:44
Any suggestions for minimizing cheating for higher stakes tests on BOLT?
denise davidson
23:05
Is there a way to embed the quiz in Conten?
Daniel McCurry
23:10
You can create a question pool with similar questions, but different answers for everyone.
denise davidson
23:10
*Content?
Kelly Roth
23:11
You can use the lockdown browser and I set time limits so they do not have enough time to search for the answers online.
Jared Kishbaugh
23:14
@jwhisner - Respondus LockDown Browser would be an option
Dianna Cherie Roberts
23:18
Use Lockdown browser
jwhisner
23:24
Thank you!
julielaptop2019
23:33
When you manually grade, how do you get the grades transferred to the grade book automatically?
lstallba
23:41
We can demonstrate lockdown next week, if nothing else.
Angela Pang
24:01
Can you show when I have a quiz save as word document, how can I transfer the entire document directly to test bank on BOLT?
lstallba
24:03
at Julie, you can associate the quiz to the gradebook
Bronwyn Laughner
24:19
To minimize chances of cheating, I create pools of questions (put in 3 questions, but have the system pick just one, for example), so which question the student gets (from that pool) is random. I also shuffle the order of questions so that students sitting side-by-side will not see questions in the same order.
Jared Kishbaugh
24:28
@julielaptop2019 - when you manually grade an item outside of the grade book you can then "publish" them
dlsta
24:35
Could we please be shown how to share a screen and upload a power point presentation. Thank you!
lstallba
25:32
@Dlsta Using Zoom, you do not upload a PPT, but you can share your PPT with share screen feature.
dlsta
26:24
Okay, could that be demonstrated please or I can come up today as I am having difficulty with doing this. Thank you.
lstallba
26:36
@dlsta yes
lstallba
26:41
Who is DLSTA?
dlsta
27:32

lstallba
28:45
For everyone in here, you are essentially experiencing Zoom as a participant/student.
lstallba
29:03
It's good to have a consistent submission time.
jwhisner
29:10
Maybe a topic for another day, but rubrics really streamline scoring BOLT assignments

Careful about midnight as a deadline.

Thanks 2jwhisner
Angela La Valley
30:06
11:59 p.m works as a good stand in for a midnight deadline
Arjun Sondhi
30:09
I have a department meeting at 11:30 on zoom for which I have to leave. What time do you think this session will go till?
lstallba
30:20
Probably noon.
Dianna Cherie Roberts
30:41
This session is being recorded so you can access it later, a link should be sent out.
Rebecca Willoughby
30:45
Second Lisa on the midnight deadline. Gets confusing. I tend to go with 11:30pm.
Arjun Sondhi
30:52
Okay, I will try and be back. Otherwise I will watch the recording. Thanks
Adam Betz
31:06
Please show how to create discussion forums. that will be my surrogate for class participation.
lstallba
31:18
Arjun, also we are all glad to offer individual support, and next week we have a bunch of sessions scheduled.
Noah Wasielewski
34:47
Where can we download the software that converts examinations from Word files into BOLT quiz format? Sorry- I forgot the name of the software.
Rebecca Willoughby
35:12
Organization is key to your students being able to FIND things on BOLT. You may have to give a "tour" to show them--
jxin
35:26
all physics homeworks re done on papers, are students allowed to submit any types of files, jpg, pdf, doc, etc...
lstallba
35:52
Colleagues, a lot of directions on how to set up are available at : https://bloomuimdc.freshdesk.com/support/home
Jared Kishbaugh
36:13
@Noah - RespondusYou can grab it from the Software Center
lstallba
36:16
One set are specific to instructors: https://bloomuimdc.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/35000084806
jwhisner
36:26
I have students take a clear photo and submit image to BOLT for problems worked on paper.
jxin
36:48
good!
jxin
37:13
iPhone pictures, very convenience.
Jared Kishbaugh
37:42
@jxin - For text files students can upload:RTF, PPT, PPS, PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPTX, XML, XLS, TXT, WPD
jwhisner
37:44
@jared - does Respondus work for Macs?
Jared Kishbaugh
38:10
@jxin - we recommend they upload with DOCX or PDF.
Daniel McCurry
38:18
I would recommend students upload things as PDF only. The formatting often gets ruined.
David Sedlak
38:35
can threads or posts be restricted to certain students (aka groups for group projects) that other groups cannot see?
Ronda Mariani
38:40
I like making it a grade item
Dianna Cherie Roberts
39:27
Students can submit pdf, doc and I believe jpg is also an option. I believe when students submit, BOLT does let them know what types of files are permitted.
Rebecca Willoughby
40:05
You need to provide expectations for what the DB posts should look like. I give points for an original post, and then a few additional points for each response to another student. But my classes are generally small-- no more than 35
Jared Kishbaugh
40:16
@jwhisner - Respondus is Win only
jwhisner
40:27
@jared - Crud
Dianna Cherie Roberts
40:54
For my discussion boards, I have done by units, assignment topics, and weeks. I have also had students submit voiced PowerPoint presentations into DB.
Mindy Andino
41:27
you can also do a private discussion thread between you and the student if that is important for your class
Dianna Cherie Roberts
41:48
Be aware there is a limit to file sizes for uploads for students.
Rebecca Willoughby
41:49
If they're writing in Word documents and pasting into the DB box, you can also give a word count requirement
Jared Kishbaugh
41:53
@Mindy - Yes, this is a great way to do private journals or self reflections
Ronda Mariani
42:44
This is an example of what I do for each discussion:Discussion Assignment:Read the case study, "Hey Alexa - What is Consumer Behavior" at the end of Chapter One of your textbook "Consumer Behavior; Buying, Having, and Being". Answer all three discussion question; CS 1-1, CS 1-2, and CS 1-3.Discussion Requirements:Discussion boards are one of many tools designed to enhance the community and engage students in the online classroom. The discussion questions will focus on the module’s topic and require you to provide in-depth, original responses as well as thoughtful critiques of your classmates’ responses. In order for discussions to be beneficial; timely posting is key.For each module, respond to a discussion question posted on the Discussion Board no later than Tuesday 11:59 PM EST/EDT of the respective module (this will be your initial post). Finally, post responses to at least two classmates no later than Friday 11:59 PM EST/EDT. When posting make sure to validate your responses by using sources from
lstallba
42:59
Ronda, thanks.
Angela La Valley
43:00
If you have a general Q&A discussion (or any other discussion), you can subscribe to the discussion so you get notifications when a student posts something
jwhisner
43:10
@Ronda - Thank you!
carriewinship
43:18
Can you embed a discussion board link into a module? As you did with the sample quiz link?
lstallba
43:26
Dennis Frohlich has a tutorial on discussion board in TALE's BOLT page.
Jared Kishbaugh
43:28
@Carrie - yes
Dianna Cherie Roberts
43:38
You can also require that students submit their post first before being allowed to read other peers' post.
julielaptop2019
47:12
What is the max number of people in a Zoom meeting?
lstallba
47:18
300
Jared Kishbaugh
47:20
300
Rebecca Willoughby
47:24
!!
john
47:43
so you can make it once fore each class for the duration of the semester... correct?
lstallba
47:51
Yes,
Jared Kishbaugh
48:40
@john - you can do it several ways, one recurring meeting or setup individual meetings for each class.
lstallba
48:43
If you are teaching a really large class, you might want to adapt. For example, if you teach a course with 50 or more, and it meets MWF at 9 Am, meet with 1/2 or 1/3 on M; another 1/2 or 1/3 on W, etc....
Rebecca Willoughby
49:07
Is the Chat feature on BOLT similar to this feature we're using now?
lstallba
49:15
identical
Rebecca Willoughby
49:22
Thx
Angela La Valley
49:26
Does chat do video? I thought it just did text.
bluejazz9
50:13
so then, all ideos are stored in the cloud?
Jared Kishbaugh
50:35
RE: Chat feature in BOLT - it is jus text chat
julielaptop2019
52:08
Or don’t record it to begin with.
David Durian
52:23
Are we limited to how long videos can be and/or how many videos we can store?
Jared Kishbaugh
52:37
@David - There's always a limit :)
David Durian
53:02
Okay let me rephrase that—what are the limits?
Jared Kishbaugh
53:08
If we get near that we will notify folks
Jared Kishbaugh
53:26
as for time limit, a normal class period will be fine
David Durian
53:48
By normal are you saying 1 hr 15 or 50 mins?
Jared Kishbaugh
53:56
both
Jared Kishbaugh
54:10
I've seen some recordings of 3 hours classes, however, I caution that...
Ronda Mariani
54:18
How do you hold private office hours. If everyone is in the waiting room, can I individually choose students to speak to.
tschmidt
54:21
How would the recording be accessed? I’m thinking of students who may not be able to observe in real time
Adam Betz
54:25
I would like to just record lectures ahead of time for students to watch on their own time. how do we do that?
Rebecca Willoughby
54:50
@Adam I would recommend YouTube, but I know we can also use Mediasite
Jared Kishbaugh
54:54
@Adam - Mediasite Desktop Recorder would be ideal for that situatoin
Jared Kishbaugh
55:07
There will be trainings on Mediasite next week as well
Rebecca Willoughby
55:15
Is there now a transcription feature in Mediasite?
Jared Kishbaugh
55:25
@Rebecca - there is
Rebecca Willoughby
55:35
Awesome.
Jared Kishbaugh
55:38
But it requires manual effort
David Durian
55:41
It would be nice for someone to show us medissite today too
Jared Kishbaugh
55:46
so not as awesome but servicable
Mindy Andino
56:03
I hold office hours via zoom currently and my students love it. I use the waiting room feature for confidentiality,
lstallba
56:06
We are doing Mediasite next week in face to face sessions
lstallba
56:24
But you can also arrange an individual consultation with Asa Kelley.
David Durian
56:36
Awesome
Rebecca Willoughby
56:41
@Jared so.... not to be non-proprietary, but, YouTube does that automatically, no?
Jared Kishbaugh
57:04
@Rebecca - YouTube does, yes.
Rebecca Willoughby
57:18
k
Jared Kishbaugh
57:30
We are looking at possibility of using a CC vendor to create captioning automatically
Jared Kishbaugh
57:42
but that comes with a $$$ tag
Rebecca Willoughby
57:58
Understood
jwhisner
58:50
Yesterday’s Zoom presentation made it look like you could use a zoom session to record a voice over PPT, and that (after a short wait), basic transcription would be available
tschmidt
58:58
So are we able to set up the meeting through bolt itself?
Jared Kishbaugh
59:08
@jwhsiner - correct
lstallba
59:47
Another quick and dirty way to create a transcript if you are just adding audio to your PPT? I run the PPT with my phone's voice recording feature, which then creates a text. I email myself the transcript, then correct, paste, into the notes section of your PPT, and the language matches the image.
Kelly Roth
59:48
What do we do for students who do not have their own personal computer or tablet. I have several students who are in this situation.
Jared Kishbaugh
59:49
@tschmidt - you will need to setup the meeting via the Bloomu Zoom portal (bloomu.zoom.us) or through the desktop client.
julielaptop2019
01:00:17
Be careful to announce in writing or verbally that students should not be driving while participating by phone. Should go without saying, but its common for multi-taskers.
lstallba
01:00:22
@tschmidt: you just put the URL into BOLT content area.
john
01:00:33
I know you can share your screen, while you are doing a discussion, could you show how to do that?
lstallba
01:00:33
Truth, Julie
Rebecca Willoughby
01:01:30
Rather than list all these meetings in one spot, we can link them individually in the weekly modules, right?
lstallba
01:01:47
@rebecca, yes
Jared Kishbaugh
01:01:48
Rebecca, yes,
lstallba
01:01:54
I just prefer one link though.
Jared Kishbaugh
01:01:59
As long as you make it clear where students can find the links you should be good
tschmidt
01:02:07
where is the start button?
Nancy Gentile Ford
01:02:37
Can you show us how to use PP on Zoom.
Rebecca Willoughby
01:04:42
How did you share your screen?
Rebecca Willoughby
01:05:01
Oh, wait, I see it.
Jared Kishbaugh
01:05:05
Green Share Screen button on the bottom tool bar
Rebecca Willoughby
01:05:13
Thx
Mindy Andino
01:05:26
Has there been any discussion of closed captioning or access for our students with disabilities
Rebecca Willoughby
01:06:00
@Mindy I don't think so, but I'm also interested in that for Zoom, also
lstallba
01:06:32
with respect to CC of a live session in zoom, not possible.
lstallba
01:06:47
With respect to a recorded lecture, CC is possible with Mediasite lecture capture.
Rebecca Willoughby
01:06:52
Can that be added to the recorded video later?
Rebecca Willoughby
01:06:59
OK
lstallba
01:07:07
We currently have faculty who are hearing impaired, who have an interpreter.
Jared Kishbaugh
01:07:14
You can do live CC in Zoom, however, you would need someone to do that, very difficult to run a meeting while adding CC
Jared Kishbaugh
01:07:32
on your own
lstallba
01:07:34
Oh, sorry Jared
Nancy Gentile Ford
01:08:09
How do you put info on last screen?
ali ozdogan
01:09:51
How can I have a test student (or sand box) to preview?
Jared Kishbaugh
01:10:16
@Ali - do you mean within Zoom?
ali ozdogan
01:10:35
on Bolt
julielaptop2019

lstallba
01:12:37
Who is iPhone?
Kelly Roth
01:12:45
Yeah, that was an accident
iPhone
01:13:14
it’s Meredith Grimsley- I haven’t had time to register yet
Nancy Gentile Ford
01:13:35
Can you leave PP open for students to go in at anytime, or is it only during class
Jared Kishbaugh
01:14:10
@Nancy - if you want your students to access/view your PP you can add it to the content are of BOLT
Rebecca Willoughby
01:14:14
Srsly, thanks for the levity here, folks
Jared Kishbaugh
01:14:20
Then students can view it on demand
natalie
01:14:41
Can we pull up files from our P drive to share?
Nancy Gentile Ford
01:14:52
my draw is not working?
tschmidt
01:14:58
mine either
Angela La Valley
01:15:10
You have to turn on Annotate again
Jared Kishbaugh
01:15:12
@natalie - if you mean in Zoom, yes, you can share anything you have open on your desktop
julielaptop2019
01:15:12
Nope just playing
john
01:16:23
can you show people how to pop out those tools
john
01:16:33
I keep them on a separate screen
cherylhowlett
01:18:57
Where is the raise hand button
julielaptop2019
01:19:23
@cheryl - click “participants” at bottom of your screen
cherylhowlett
01:19:40
got it! thanks
Mike Borland
01:20:05
Would SnagIt be easier/more appropriate for powerpoint recordings?
Rebecca Willoughby
01:20:07
Maybe show adaptive release to go along with this? A mini-lecture, then a question, then more lecture?
Mindy Andino
01:20:51
I teach a 3 hour class via zoom every week
julielaptop2019
01:21:39
Our classes are 3 hours too
Jared Kishbaugh
01:21:54
@Mike B - You can certainly use SnagIt as well. If there is a tool people are comfortable with then please do!
lstallba
01:23:10
who had a suggestion.
julielaptop2019
01:23:25
I usually break it up with break out rooms for group meetings and other activities.
Mindy Andino
01:23:29
Lisa, can you also talk about the break about rooms in zoom
lstallba
01:23:44
Mindy, you mean break out rooms?
Mindy Andino
01:23:45
for class discussion in small groups
Mindy Andino
01:24:30
yes, typo sorry
Adam Betz
01:24:33

Ronda Mariani
01:26:35
